and application service frameworks). We believe that the Semantic Web markup language DAML+OIL (DARPA Agent Markup Language plus Ontology Inference Layer) will be central to this goal’s realization. The DAML Program aims to develop a Semantic Web markup language that provides sufficient rules for ontology development and that supports intelligent agents and other applications.1,2 (For more information, see the “DAML+OIL” sidebar.) As part of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s role in the DAML Program, we constructed a fielded application, ITtalks, which facilitates user and agent interaction for locating talks on information technology. ITtalks also lets developers design and create intelligent software agents that can understand and process information encoded in DAML+OIL or other semantically rich markup languages. Primarily, we focused on developing the support and infrastructure for integrating intelligent agents into the Web.

Agents Making Sense of the Semantic Web

Effective use of the vast quantity of available information and services on the Internet will require multi-agent systems to be tightly integrated with existing web infrastructure. This however will be impossible unless the information on the web is presented in a semantic language, such as the DARPA Agent Markup Language (DAML), which is one aim of the “Semantic Web”. As part of our exploratio...

Agent Communication in DAML World

Darpa Agent Markup Language (DAML) [7] is the newest effort for Semantic Web [5]. It can be used to create ontologies and markup information resource like web pages. The information resource can be read by human and understood by agent programs. We believed DAML could be used to markup agent communication content and promote knowledge sharing and exchanging between agents. This paper also sugge...

DAML+OIL: A Reason-able Web Ontology Language

Ontologies are set to play a key role in the ”Semantic Web”, extending syntactic interoperability to semantic interoperability by providing a source of shared and precisely defined terms. DAML+OIL is an ontology language specifically designed for use on the web; it exploits existing web standards (XML and RDF), adding the familiar ontological primitives of object oriented and frame based system...
